My practice is designed for clients aged 13 and older. I provide individual therapy, couples’ therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and workshops/presentations.

I offer both day time and evening appointments. Should you be interested in beginning treatment, please contact me for a free 15 minute phone consultation so we may determine if my practice is appropriate for your needs.

Intake Session

I typically set aside 90 minutes for our intake session. You will be asked to complete brief paperwork prior to this appointment. The intake session provides an opportunity to:

  • Explore the concern(s) that brought you to therapy
  • Clarify what you hope to gain from therapy
  • Determine if my services are appropriate for your needs
  • See if you are comfortable working with me
  • Discuss the therapy process and my approach to therapy
  • Learn about my office policies, procedures, privacy and confidentiality

If we determine we are not a good "fit" and that your goals and needs would be better addressed with another clinician, I will gladly provide you with three referrals to my Austin colleagues.

Useful websites for finding the right therapist for you:

If you are a parent or guardian seeking services for your minor child/teen (age 17 or younger), I require the intake session be attended by the parent(s) or guardian only. If the parents of the minor child/teen are divorced or the minor child/teen is under the care of a legal guardian, I require a copy of a legal document, such as a divorce decree, which clearly states the parent’s or guardian’s right to consent to psychological treatment for the minor child/teen in question.

TYPES OF SERVICES

Individual and Couples’ Therapy

Individual and couples’ therapy sessions are 50 minutes. While I usually recommend weekly sessions, we may determine meeting more frequently or less frequently best meets your needs. To assure you an appointment time that consistently fits your schedule I will provide you with a "standing" or regular appointment time set aside for you each week. This appointment time is held exclusively for you every week.

Family Therapy

Family therapy sessions are 60 to 70 minutes. I require that our intake session be attended by parent(s) only. This will allow us time to identify your family’s concerns and needs prior to formally beginning treatment.

Group Therapy

At various times I will provide structured therapy groups with focus on a specific topic. Topics might include coping with college transition, academic problems, dating and intimate relationships, procrastination and disorganization, eating and body image concerns, or anxiety. Groups will be offered for an 8, 10, or 12 week time period and will last 90 minutes. Groups will be limited to between 6 and 12 members.

Workshops/Presentations

I offer workshops, presentations, and speaking engagements to schools, organizations, and groups. I am happy to create and develop a presentation that fits the needs of your program.

MY APPROACH

My treatment framework draws from cognitive behavioral and interpersonal perspectives. My belief is that we all possess thoughts, world-views, or self-schemas which greatly impact our behaviors and emotional experience. For some, these thoughts or ideas may lead to significant emotional distress and/or unhealthy behaviors or choices which impact our selves and our relationships. Identifying how thoughts uniquely impact our feelings and, in turn, how these feelings powerfully influence our behavior, provides insight necessary for positive change and growth. Through therapy, I provide a safe and supportive atmosphere in which clients can work toward greater understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and discover more effective and enjoyable ways of living. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is often considered the treatment of choice for various difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and eating concerns.

I also see the therapist-client relationship as a meaningful aspect of the therapy process and often use the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle in which clients can learn about their interpersonal functioning. I consider the therapy relationship a "microcosm" of how individuals behave, react, and feel outside therapy. When relevant and when possible, I use interactions in the therapy relationship to help my clients achieve greater understanding of how they are in relationships with others.
